What matters isn’t whether Anthony eventually wins the award, but the fact we are even typing these words describes him and his role on this Lakers team. After a year out of the league spent reckoning with his basketball mortality, Anthony resolved his feelings about coming off the bench in Portland, shooting a career-best 40.9 percent from 3 last season. While these players will seldom make headlines, or garner as much attention as awards. The man behind, “Hey P! They said I gotta come off the bench!” Anthony has come a long way since that memorable 2017 Thunder media day when he was still a headlining star not just in terms of career stops, but spiritually, too. NBA Sixth Man of the Year odds give basketball bettors a chance to root for the unsung heroes of hardwood. This is the same Anthony who once greeted a question about coming off the bench with 20 straight seconds of laughter. Joe Ingles hands Jordan Clarkson the KiaSixth Man of the Year trophy /pamxUATDqb. And as preposterous as it is to ask the question seven games into the season, it is just as unlikely that the question should ever be posed in the first place. Any discussion about end-of-year awards should be prohibited until after the All-Star break but … well, it isn’t. There’s something like 92 percent of the season left to go. But it’s been going around a lot lately, so … Carmelo Anthony for Sixth Man of the Year? History tells us a whole lot can and will change between now and April when voters receive their ballots. What’s most notable is his hustle and effort on defense it’s been years since we’ve seen him play so strong and committed.Admittedly, it’s an absurd question. He started a bit slow but he’s been picking up in the last few weeks with his shooting. A success that was made possible due to Rubio’s versatility. The starting five’s defense is robust with Okoro’s addition, and that’s contributing to the success. Rubio has been able to negate the loss of Collin Sexton’s ball movement, and his ability to score and lead the second unit has allowed Isaac Okoro to fit in seamlessly with the starters. If you can argue that any two players have been as integral to a team’s success this early into the season, I’d love to hear it. Both men have been incredibly vital to the Cavs during this rebound season, and both men should be up for the award. Rubio is averaging 13 points and six assists per game, while Love is averaging closer to a double-double, with 11 points and nearly eight rebounds a game. They’re going to take votes from one another, but Ricky Rubio and Kevin Love are both vying for the Sixth Man of the Year award. UPDATE: Jordan Clarkson has been named Sixth Man of the Year, per Shams Charania. He was the favorite among the finalists, ahead of Derrick Rose and Joe Ingles. *Note: This was written before the Cavs and Jazz met on Sunday* Sixth Man of the Year – Ricky Rubio/Kevin Love They were a team that wasn’t considered to be a playoff-bound team in 2021-2022, let alone able to beat the very best the NBA has to offer. Their handicap is that everything they do is more magnified after the last three years of terrible basketball. The problem is, the Cavs have a handicap. The Cavs should be the front runners but that doesn’t mean there aren’t deserving teams and players outside of Cleveland who are going to make a case for their own legitimacy.
